The London Irish Music School was established in 1999 under the direction of Colette Keaveney (TTCT) who is a qualified teacher of Traditional Irish Music registered with Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann in Dublin, Ireland.

The aim of Comhaltas Ceoltoiri Eireann is to promote the Music, Culture and Arts of Ireland at Home and Abroad. The London Irish Music School’s main objective is to fulfil this aim and to be able to reach as many children in London as possible.

The London Irish Music holds lessons for children from the age of 6 in a group environment. Classes are structured in small groups according to the child’s age, ability and previous knowledge of music. For the very young child (infant stage - years 1 and 2) the main emphasis is on holding the tin whistle, being able to cover the holes, produce a sound and playing very easy tunes.

The children in the junior age are usually able to pick up the basic principles of playing much quicker and are encouraged onto polkas, marches, jogs and reels.

The main aim is to get children playing first and then when they feel ready, to learn the basic concepts of music theory and begin to read the music. As pupils move onto more complicated jigs, reels and hornpipes they can incorporate ornamentation to their repertoire and also choose to take up the main instrument of their choice.

Instruments that can be learnt are:

  • Tin Whistle
  • Banjo
  • Concertina
  • Button Accordion
  • Fiddle
  • Mandolin
  • Flute
