Exams
Just like with classical music, children are now able to take graded exams in Traditional Irish Music, from Preliminary to Grade 8, both in solo and group performances. These grades are internationally recognised and are similar in status to the classical music grades, and any student achieving an honour or merit pass at either grade 6 or 8, can use this as points towards university entrance. These exams are much more practical and flexible than classical grades - there are no scales to learn and the student is allowed to choose suitable tunes to play, depending on the level.
To date we have had 100% pass results, with the youngest pupil gaining an honour pass at only five years old. However, exams are not compulsary! We want all pupils to enjoy playing music at whatever level - from beginner to concert artist! The examiner in 2005 was Patrick Davy from Belfast who was very patient and kind to all the children. He found time to talk to them all and helped those who had been feeling a little nervous to relax and therefore play better.
